Structure of the GM

The structure of the Global Mechanism is based on a matrix approach, combining regional and strategic programmes. The programmes work hand-in-hand to support country Parties in developing comprehensive country programmes to increase investments into sustainable land management.

This structure was adopted to optimize the impact of the GM's operations in light of the new international setting for resource allocation and emerging investment opportunities from thematic areas closely linked with land management.

Regional Programmes

The GM's regional programmes are responsible for developing the country programmes and for coordinating country, regional and sub-regional activities. The country programmes provide a coherent package of activities that aim to create an enabling environment for increased investments in SLM.

The GM's regional programmes are:
  • Asia and Pacific;
  • East and Southern Africa;
  • North Africa;
  • Latin America and the Caribbean; and
  • West and Central Africa.

Strategic Programmes

The strategic programmes were established to complement the GM's country engagement, thus increasing the impact of its operations at the country and sub-regional levels. These programmes have been selected from a broad spectrum of thematic areas on the basis of their potential to increase finance for UNCCD implementation. Others may be added in the future to enhance the GM's comprehensive approach to UNCCD implementation.

The GM's strategic programmes are:
  • Economics & Financing Instruments;
  • Market Access &Trade;
  • Climate Change Finance;
  • Innovative Finance & Private Sector;
  • Civil Society;
  • Policy and Investment Analysis; and
  • Forest Finance.

Communications and Outreach

The GM places prime importance on communications and outreach in order to maximise the impact of its operations. The Communications Group is responsible for utilizing the most effective channels to raise awareness, share information, stimulate dialogue, generate knowledge, and empower the GM's constituencies on UNCCD implementation. Its work programme is based on web-based and e-mail-based instruments, tools to foster media relations and knowledge management.
