Who we are

roots

The Global Mechanism (GM) is a specialised institution, dedicated to supporting developing countries to increase investments into Sustainable Land Management (SLM), in order to help reverse, control and prevent land degradation and desertification.

With the livelihoods of so many directly dependent on the quality and productivity of land and its resources, SLM is a vital measure with the potential to meet broad development objectives, including food security, economic growth and poverty alleviation.

As a subsidiary body of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) - an international treaty ratified by 195 countries - the GM supports developing countries to position land as an investment priority at the national and international levels. In addition, the GM provides countries with specialised advice on accessing finance for SLM from a range of public and private sources, both domestic and international.

Since beginning its operations in 1998, the GM has been hosted by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), one of the world's leading international financial institutions in promoting smallholder agriculture and ''Enabling poor rural people to overcome poverty''.
