However, the true economic value of these resources is often unknown or neglected. This may result in land use/management decisions leading to land degradation and other forms of natural capital depreciation. In recent years, an increasing emphasis has been placed on quantifying land and ecosystem services as a tool for moving towards sustainable development and the green economy.
The GM, in collaboration with the OSLO consortium, is hosting a side event on Wednesday 12 October at the margins of COP 10, at the Rio Ecosystems Pavilion called 'Integrated Economic Assessment of Land Resources and Ecosystem Services'.
The event will demonstrate how to build an understanding of the economic value of land resources and the economic rationale for measures to combat land degradation and will discuss how to link this understanding to key policies for sustainable development. Case studies from different parts of the world and the experience of policy makers will be brought together to show how and why this should be a central pillar of any approach to sustainable land management and the management of fragile ecosystems in different environments.
The seminar will provide an opportunity for representatives of the leading organizations involved in this work to inform UNCCD stakeholders on the results achieved in this research and on challenges and opportunities ahead.
