Republic of Rwanda and the GM sign cooperation agreement

12 August, 2008

On 27 July 2008, the Minister of Natural Resources of the Republic of Rwanda and the Global Mechanism (GM) signed a cooperation agreement detailing the GM’s support to the Republic of Rwanda for the elaboration of the National Action Programme (NAP) to implement the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

The overall objective of the GM support programme is to assist the Republic of Rwanda in formulating and implementing sound policies for sustainable land management (SLM). It also seeks to provide guidance for the creation of an enabling environment that is conducive to the mobilization of resources for UNCCD implementation, thereby contributing to poverty reduction and sustainable development efforts in the country.

Under this agreement, the GM will provide technical and financial support to the Ministry of Natural Resources, which is the National Focal Point Institution for the UNCCD. Activities supported include the organization of stakeholder consultations and validation meetings at the local and national level and the finalization of the NAP.

The NAP elaboration process is fully aligned to the Ten-year Strategic Plan and Framework to Enhance Implementation of the UNCCD (2008-2018), adopted by country Parties to the Convention during the 8th session of the Conference of Parties, in Madrid in September 2007. In this context, the NAP will be integrated into overall development policy frameworks that will be strengthened. At the same time, new opportunities for NAP financing will be assessed.
